Dear Dan et al.:
BUT - French and German clarinets do not have all the holes in the same
places, nor do they have the same bore profiles, nor in general do they
have the same kinds of mouthpiece or reeds. One would expect a
difference in tone quality, just as with the French and German bassoons,
though to a lesser extent. The difficulties people on the list had with
distinguishing French/American/German clarinettists on record a while
back can be attributed to the predominance of the personal chara
teristics of the players over the acoustic factors - can't it????
I suppose the different mouthpiece end setups may in fact smooth out the
other differences too,
