Jennifer,

You may be interested that the case is just reverse in Japan.
In almost all Japanese highschool bands, all woodwind players
(including clarinet, of course!) are female, and all brass players
are male.

I think this is because the Japanese band directors tend to think
playing the woodwind instruments is easier and/or requires less power
of breath than playing the brass instruments. (of course, this is not
true, however the Japanese band directors are not trained musician; in
fact, they are English teachers, math teachers, or Japanese teachers.)

I don't know if almost clarinet players in the other US highschool
bands are male. When I was a member of a symphonic band in
the University of Toronto last year, 5 of 7 clarinet players are female.

Anyway, it's an interesting question. :)
