Hi,
I believe the contests have "lists" and they vary each year. You have to
play one of the pieces on the that year's list or you are disqualified.
Check with the contest rules about this before preparing for contests. It
doesn't seem to have anything to do with the merit of the pieces since what
is on one year's list may not be on the next year's list, but may show up
again two or three years down the line. When I went to school, the band and
orchestra directors got the list from the state and posted it for students
to
look over and decide what they wanted to do. This was a long time ago but
I don't think the contests have changed that much.
