I have followed with a lot of interest this discussion on the use of different
clarinets. I, for one, believe that the different clarinets were (and are) used
for their timbural differences, as opposed to providing more convenient key
signatures. The Beethoven 5 serves as a very nice example to prove my point.
The change to C clarinet allows the clarinetist to fit in to the brighter brassy
timbre of that particular movement. Just one more reason why the Beethoven 5 is
the most convenient symphony ever writtten; anything you ever wanted to know
about symphonic music of the Classical era can be very easily accessed in the
Beethoven 5th.
