Ok, it's gloves off time. Lets look at the situation in "real, non-
academic performance situation". Pontificating aside..
The Brahms Sym. #3 is a pretty long work. Maybe, just maybe, it will open
a program, but probably not. It often will end a concert. Now, saying
that you can't keep your horn warm for 2 minutes is being short sighted.
What are the odds that the piece (be it an overture, etc.)
<bold>before</bold> the Brahms will be on A clarinet-50/50? I don't think
so.... Therefore, you are now coming to a big throat note solo starting
on open G, on a clarinet that hasn't been played for the last 5-10
minutes at least. That to me is a problem waiting to happen...
