I've found this thread a little surprising, but, as I think about it, Ham
radio and music may be a fairly common pair. I am no longer a Ham (except
in the usual sense), but I was one long ago, back in vacuum tube days. I
was W3CCP, having taken my Novice at age 11 and my General at age 12.
What's curious is that the fellow who gave me the Novice test was a guitar
player named Ed Kay (W3DQE), and my closest friend in amateur radio was a
bass player named Gary Brown (W3AFF). (This was when I was still in
junior high and high school -- Brown went on to incredible celebrity,
winning an Oscar for inventing the SteadiCam.) Later, after having allowed
my General license to lapse, I ran into another musician/Ham, Al Brogdon,
trombonist and leader of Southern Comfort, a trad jazz band. I think this
is another manifestation of the math/music relationship (after all, Ohm's
Law was on that Novice test!), but it's been interesting to hear about
clarinet playing Hams.
