Actually, I have very little recollection of my entire first year of school
clarinet lessons. I do have one mental image of 12-15 of us standing up, in
an unused kindergarten room trying to play our rented, poorly adjusted
metal clarinets. We studied from the Tune-a-Day books. For some reason all
but one of my fellow students were boys. We were in the fourth grade and it
will be 40 years this next autumn.

By the time I was in high school, all of my original classmates had stopped
playing.
