Subj: Julianne Kirk asks a question
Date: Fri, 3 Jan 1997 00:58:27 -0500

In making an inquiry about Sharon Kam, Julianne asks Rand, "Does she
sound French, German, ...?"

Julianne what does a French clarinetist sound like? Or more to the
point, what does a clarinetist trained under French influence and
philosophy sound like? Same question about German.

What I am suggesting is that your question cannot be answered in
any rational way because it is based on presumptions that are
irrational. This is not an attempt to flame you or even be
critical in any way. It is rather that such a question appears to
me to be so foreign to a rational approach to clarinet playing as
to be impossible to answer in a structured fashion.

I am anxious to see a very precise response to my question and,
since you asked the question, it seems reasonable to assume that
you have the idea of a French or German sound in your head.

Tell me what you hear. I can be convinced.
