Reguardless of your instrument, if notes are coming out sharp you may wish
to try a harder reed. I don't want to open up the whole "vandoren
controversey" again so I won't comment on brand...

Just as a personal note, when I was in your shoes a few years ago, I
managed to find a "professional" instrument used. (Pre R-13) From what I
can tell playing it and the more objective opinsions of a repairman, I did
fairly well, but check the horn out carefully. I did it blind and got
lucky.
