I recently had the same experience with a student. My gut feeling was to tell
her to have it pinned, because at least there would be the chance that it
would play the same, being the same instrument. My feeling is that if the
joint was replaced, odds are much greater that it would play differently as
it would essentially be a different instrument.
Incidentally though, her father did not agree, his feeling being that they
paid good money for the instrument and that it was now inferior or damaged
goods. He wants to go with replacement.
