No, Ed, this one was true. Many are hoaxes, though.

Houghton-Mifflin was the sponsor of "The Polar Express Share the
Spirit Campaign", whereby they promised to give away 1 book for
every 25 e-mails. They gave away 2500 books this year, and reached
their goal. E-mails are no longer being accepted. You can read

If people spread the rumor that this was a hoax then Houghton
Mifflin gets no credit fot the service they've done. If you
read that it was a hoax, kindly put those people straight.
