Dan,

Of COURSE clarinet players are mystics! (Surely you knew that before.)
Who else would pursue an endeavor where the outcome of years of
dedicated effort is always riding on the condition of one fragile sliver
of wood? Who else could maintain faith (in the face of ample
experiential evidence to the contrary) that there will be at least ONE
GOOD REED in every over-priced box of Van Dorens? If we didn't drink
deep from the springs of mystical inspiration, we'd all switch to a
practical instrument and use our lifetime supply of "maybe" reeds for
kindling. And the sad truth of the matter is that mystical experience
is very tricky to describe "objectively"--hence the perfect topic for
clarinetists. Regards,

Nancy
