I second David N.'s comments on soprano sax. I am lucky enough to have
gotten a good one, an antique in C, not Bb and it is a charming and quirky
instrument. I have played some others and they were much more touchy
--intonation is a problem on many notes and the weight, without a neck strap
might be hard for the little hands of a young child. Some sopranos don't
have a ring for a neck strap (mine doesn't) Also the speaker key on a
soprano is so small and delicate that it gets out of whack very easily and a
kid could wreck it fooling around trying to fix it. Alto saxes are made to
be supported by a neck strap and are far easier to find in a decent condition
and price range.
