I figured I oughta get around to introducing myself. I subscribed to the
Klarinet listserv about three weeks ago and enjoy getting so much e-mail
about one of my favorite subjects, the clarinet.

I live in Duluth, Minnesota where I teach clarinet at two universities and
perform in most of the local classical music groups. I moved here from San
Diego, where I played with the San Diego Symphony (as a utility
clarinetist) and played Principal with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra
among other stuff.

I recently found a wonderful pianist and we are working on our first
recital together in April. We have been learning the standard rep and
wanting to explore music that is new to both of us. This brings me to the
the next part of this note.

As a musician who is always trying to find new (meaning unfamiliar as
opposed to "contemporary") music to perform, I am sure there are those who
would be interested in the recommendations of lesser known works. I know I
haven't heard every clarinet piece ever written. Perhaps those interested
could share the names of a few pieces that (in his or her estimation) are
not very well known but deserving attention.

I'll start 'er off.
Ben-Haim, Paul, Pastorale Variee, (publisher used to be MCA/Dorn catalog
has it listed). My first clarinet teacher played this piece on his senior
recital and I fell in love with it.

Raphael, Gunther, Sonatine, Breitkopf & Hartel. An enjoyable piece for the
clarinet. The piano has a lot of sustained, rhythmic passages which could
get a little tedious for some pianists.
