Laura,

Try to enroll in lessons at your school. I attend the university of Oklahoma
and there are some nonmajors that have enrolled in private lessons and play
in the bands. We have 4 bands so that there is a place for most everyone to
play. Hopefully your school will have an ensemble in which you can start
playing. Ask around the music school, find a student that might be willing
to help you out or talk to the clarinet professor and see if heshe would
have time to take you on as a student. As long as you practice and try your
best you should be able to gain back what you've lost. Check around the
community too, see if there are community bands to play in. They are always
a lot of fun as well.

I stopped playing my freshman year in high school and didn't start playing
again until sophomore year in high school. I play viola also so I did keep
playing viola. I began private clarinet lessons in the spring by winter I
made the all-state band. My senior year I made first chair all-state
orchestra and had decided to pursue a clarinet performance major. I have
considered myself quite behind for my age but I think I'm beginning to catch
up but it takes a lot of practicing. It can be done. You just have to put in
the time.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
Julianne Kirk
