Ivan is the name of the cat in Peter and the Wolf. You know, that lovely low
sneaky theme as the cat stalks the bird and menaces the duck. Get out your
kiddy record and play the side with the narration--all the characters have
names except the hunters!

The Tchaikowsky comment was in reference to the Pathetic (6th) Symphony where
the clarinets are also low and sonorous. Mehitabel (the cat that loved
clarinets) used to like that symphony too.
