To stay with 20th century music, nothing is more flashy and short than
Malcolm Arnold's Three Shanties, Op. 4. But if I should choose a modern
piece quite different from the Nielsen and Ibert I would seriously consider
Samuel Barber's Summer Music, Op. 31. It is a fine piece, both flashy and
lyrical at turns, dating from the mid-1950s, and it is a single movement.
