Tony,
I have learned all my tunes from recordings. Some I just heard
often enough to learn and others I have transcribed for BAMCo. The
recordings come from various sources. Some are available from Tower or
other record store and some only from Worldtone Records in New York,
which specializes in folk dance music from around the world. Still
others are from out-of-production labels or are from recordings not
available in the US. As we are plugged into the folk dance community and
know what dances they do, those are the tunes we learn. Also, the
just-departed Tupan player is a well-known dance teacher and quite an
authority on the dance music of the Balkans so he has tons of recordings
that noone else has. A good source would be to look up the Eastern
European Folklife Center on the Internet.
Do I guess correctly that you are in Washington State? If so, how
close to Seattle are you. There is a large and active folk music and
dance community there. Again, the EEFC would be a good place to start.
