Hi,Jen:

Try with Richard Hawkins mouthpiece and Rico Thick Blanks Reeds(3 3/4)
(for the ligature...BG revelation,Rowner(dark) or Blancher(light)).
You will get a good pitch and easy attack in all notes.
I think that you are looking forward for this when you say:
"It doesn't seem to want to take all I want to give it".
