Hi Chris,

I can't offer any answer regarding why the neck is shorter. I bought
the 37 within weeks of its initial arrival in the US last year. As you
hinted, it is a superb instrument in many significant respects. I have
not noticed any adverse effects from having to pull the neck out a
little bit. In fact, the sound is so compact in comparison to my old
Selmer, and certainly in comparison to Buffet's "Prestige", I'm still
getting used to it. The clarity and focus of the upper register is
unique among bass clarinets in my opinion. As Clark Fobes noticed
early on while we were comparing it to other instruments, the 37's
design is such that notes in the upper clarion and altissimo
registers sound closer to the way a soprano clarinet sounds when
played an octave lower (so that the two instruments are in the
same acoustic range).
