Patricia brings up the very important issue of "reed on top". And
Roger suggests that someone stated that Stadler played that way.

It wasn't me. I don't know anything about the mechanics of
Stadler's set up.

I once tried a reed on top technique and I couldn't tongue the
instrument at all. I couldn't do anything. There has to be
more to it than simply turning the mouthpiece upside down.

Belated comment - I actually thought Dan (or somebody else, evidently)
had suggested Stadler played with the reed *underneath* and was one of
the first to do so. Do those pictures of Stadler from Riga give any clue?
Do any "authentic" players try the "reed-on-top" method these days, with
a classical style mouthpiece? One clear requirement would (I think) be a
very long scrape on the reed.
