Subject: Harmonics

There is a very useful software program for analyzing harmonics. I use it
frequently in my instrument design. It is
called Spectrogram 3 and is freeware. So, you are free to us it with out any
payment involved. I works on all
windows 95 systems, with a sound card and microphone.

Spectrogram 3 uses the microphone on your computer for input to display your
flute tones in a detailed color
Spectrogram. It even has a real time display so you can see the tones appear
as you are playing the flute.

The direct link for download is:

I have found it very useful and I am sure that you will enjoy it, and it will
provide insight to your flute playing.

Just a note regarding harmonics the purpose of the boehm taper is to tune up
the second overtone or first harmonic
of the flute. This is why simple flutes with out tapers are severely out of
tune in the second register. When
testing your theory on perfectly tuned harmonics you should also test flutes
with out boehm tapers.
