Alan,
I just saw a new reprint (1994) of the Shaw book in a bookstore in
town. This is a "must read" for all clarinetists. When I read this book
10 years ago, I couldn't put it down. Another book along the same line is
a collection of interviews with musicians from Woody Herman's big bands. I
don't know the title offhand but this is a real insight into that era (and
beyond - it covers the Herds till his death).
