Serge,
I don't know where you are considering, but there are also colleges that
let non-majors have seats in the orchestra (ex. Middlebury where the first clar
is a geo major and the second clar is a double geo/music comp major). Ask,
since
my high school conductor said the same thing about only majors getting places
and
it proved wrong. And, unfortunately, an A clarinet is almost esential. A few
colleges, though, will rent one for you since they understand the finacial hard-
ships of being a college student. Another question to ask. One more good
question is how many clarinets are there now in the orchestra (most only need 2,
but may have a third on rotation) and what class (soph, jun, etc.) they are.
