What's a thumb F# key? My thumb only plays an F/C ring and a register key.

I assume they mean the ring key controlled by the left thumb. This is the
highest hole open when the middle f# is sounded - isn't it? I take it
that, similarly, the "D/a hole" is
the one for the left-hand third finger. The movement of the ringkey is
restricted by the touchpiece of the throat A key, and so is its permissible
diameter. Increasing the
airflow through through this hole might well improve (or something) the
sound of all the notes above it - but a redesign of the A key seems to be
called for too.
