I auditioned at DePaul over a year ago, and while Combs' and Yeh's
reputations are established both as performers and pedagogues, DeRoche's
approach to teaching appeared very akin to how one would teach a high
school student (or younger). In fact, although I was wait-listed, the
gentleman who spoke with me after the audition (director of admissions, I
think) told me that DeRoche had a good reputation for bringing out the
full potential of high school students, but did not necessarily work well
with more advanced players. In addition to herself, isn't her husband
also on the faculty at DePaul, perhaps as director of bands or something?
Mariane, what is your take on DeRoche?
