Steve,
Good point on the Mozart. A couple of years ago I read an
interview with Larry Combs. At the time he was preparing the Corigliano
Concerto to perform with the CSO. The interviewer asked Larry what was the
most difficult piece he has ever performed. Everyone was expecting the
Nielsen or Corigliano but Larry said the Mozart Concerto. He said:
"There's a responsibility that goes along with the piece stylistically and
the clarity of the writing makes it a tremendously difficult thing to do
well. Everyone plays it, few do it well. There are plenty of challenges
in the Corigliano, but I think I'd be more nervous about the Mozart."
