Hi, I've been sitting here listening to this entire conductor spiel and
thinking, boy, these guys haven't had Evan. Who is Evan? Well, he
happens to be the Middlebury College Orchestra director. Now, before you
tune out, we do have a decent orchestra. Mainly because we have a great
conductor. Evan Bennet (might as well give you his entire name...) not
only manages to find music that challenges everyone in the orchestra, but
manages to get us to play it. And yes, you do need a conductor. We're
currently playing 'The Birds' by Respighini (no, I'm not good with
composer names...), which changes tempo every line. You can tell when
the orchestra is watching Evan, by whether we manage to follow him. The
same goes for dynamics, enterences, exits, strange rhythms, and other
amusing occurences. Some conductors you ignore (like my choral
conductor... but I'm not going to be mean), but there are some you just
have to watch because you learn from them.
