Dear Clarinetists:

Regarding the inquiry by Bruce Currie of Wheaton, IL for clarinet and
percussion recital pieces. The composition you referred to a "a clarinet
piece with percussion, candles, and black-out finish" is entitled "
Sources III" by David Burge. David Burge, pianist, teacher, and composer;
b, 1930 in Evanston, IL. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees at
Northwestern University School of Music and his Doctorate of Music at
Eastman.
"Sources III" is one of the most interesting pieces for clarinet and
percussion. It is made up of six movements or episodes which are segue.
This work utilizes many timbres, as well as melodies and rhythms of diverse
and varying character. It is performed by candle light and involves
theatrics which contribute to the dramatic dimension as well as to the
total musical effect. The composition is suitable for advanced players. The
clarinetist isrequired to play some percussion. Ten candles are needed. The
percussion set-up included lujon or 8 bells, suspended cymbal, 3 triangles,
vibes, 3 woodblocks, 2 high toms, 2 congas, bass drum, and large tam-tam.
The piece has much audience appeal and is very rewarding for the
performers. I highly recommend it.

Sincerely,

Robert Damm, Percussion Instructor
