Can you explain what you mean by 'musician'? Are you implying that it is not
possible for an amateur that 'Music is his/her life; most outside interests are
music related.'? I know some amateurs who will deny this.
Sometimes somebody discovers music too late in his/her life to become a pro or
somebody may not want to end up as a music teacher of loads of (often
uninterested) teenagers.
Somebody can start a non-music career but still be a musician in his/her heart,
devoting all free time (and money) to making music.
