Someone inquired recently about how to locate Music Minus One
recordings. I was certain there would be the usual flurry of expert
answers, but I have not yet seen a response, so I'll offer my little bit
of information.

I have used a similar system, called Ensemble Live, put out by Sony
Music. The list of music available thus far is limited: the pieces of
interest to clarinetists are the Beethoven Quintet for Piano and Winds
in E-flat Major, Op. 16; the Mozart Quintet for Piano and Winds in
E-flat Major, K. 452; and the Mozart Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Viola
in E-flat major, K. 498. The package gives you sheet music for your
part and a CD with a recording of a full performance and a second
recording "without your instrument." I have gotten these at Tower
Records in Washington, D.C. The address given on the package is for
Ensemble Music, Inc., P.O. Box 1324, Gracie Station, New York, NY 10028
(sorry, no email address!).

I have also seen advertised a package called "Clarinet Solos for the
Performing Artist," with Eddie Daniels and Michael Garson. According to
the ad, "This unique new play-along package features four recital solos
which explore both jazz and classical styles. The recording includes
the clarinet and piano parts (performed by Daniels and Garson), the
accompaniment part alone, recorded at a slowed-down rehearsal tempo, and
again at the original performance tempo. Each piece may be performed
with your own pianist or the recording." I haven't looked at this
package, and I have no idea what the music is like, but I must admit
that I am attracted by the "slowed-down rehearsal tempo," which I expect
I would find more playable than the usual Eddie Daniels tempo. This
package provides sheet music for both clarinet and piano and either a
CD or a cassette recording for $24.95 (1995 price) plus shipping and
