If you use mink oil instead of the commercial cork grease preparations,
all your grease problems will go away.

Mink oil, which you can get at many shoe repair shops--it's used for
leather--works better than cork grease. You need to apply only a small
amount, so your chances of smearing it all over are minimized. And, a
small amount is much slipperier than cork grease. It is also easier to
remove when you're finished playing.

Mink oil comes in tins and plastic containers. I scoop it out and fill up
a Selmer application tube--a Chapstick tubes works well, too. These
applicators are more convenient, because you don't get the stuff on your
hands and they're easier to store in your case.
