Two Italian clarinetists performed at the '96 ClarinetFest in Paris this past
summer. Michele Incenzo, whom I didn't hear, is currently the solo clarinetist
and teacher at the Academia Nazionale de Santa Cecelia in Rome. I heard him
perform many years ago at an ICS Clarinet Congress in Denver. I don't recall
anything special about his playing, ie: Italian Clarinet School - whatever that
is.

But, I heard a very fine young clarinetist by the name of Fabrizio Meloni. He is
the solo clarinet at the Scala De Milan Orchestra since 1984. He had a beautiful
sound - French? (who cares - it was lovely). He performed a world premier of a
work by Carlo Boccadoro entitled 'The Black Mirror' and the 'Sonata in D' by
Nino
Rota. Fabrizio and I had some correspondence prior to the ClarinetFest and I was
anxious to hear him. He didn't disappoint.

Too bad some of the great clarinetists of Italian descent aren't still
performing. I remember outstanding tone as one of the characteristics of their
playing.

Regards!
