This is a specific question to (hopefully) composers on the list
or who have experience in this sort of thing:
My trumpet/piano playing son has worked out his own arrangement of a
jazz piano tune to band tune. His middle school band teacher will give
it a look to possibly use it at a concert and/or festival. What do
we do to secure rights to performance for an original arrangement of
a copyrighted tune?

I make my living writing/improving/profiling software for major
vendors. Since I'm a work-for-hire, I don't get much experience in
the copyright arena, but I'm aware of legal implications and such.
If the arrangement is good, it may possible be used as an entry in
solo/ensenble festival, and things would get sticky fast.
