Frances,
Using the same strength Vandoren (or any of the "real" reeds) and comparing it
to a Rico is equivalent to buying a 12 speed bike, putting it in 12th gear,
and saying that the bike is harder to pedal then a 40 Lb. standard, no gear
bike from Kmart. Go down at least a 1/2 strength when you try a non Rico (
even their Mitchel Lurie (made by Rico Corp). Go down an entire strength when
trying a Vandoren V-12, and Grand Concert Thick Blank. That will help
eliminate a "chain saw" buzz sound, that Rico's are renowned for.

NOnonononoooooo. Rico reeds are FANTASTIC because they're really cheap.
when I used vandoren, rico royal etc. and i was thinking 'oh it must be
so difficult because they're harder' and, when I went back to the same
strengh on rico it was much ,muach easier!! These reeds are fantastic. I
haven't actually plucked up the courage to buy an oboe reed yet, but I'm
sure if rico made them they'd be great too!

Frances.
