I am posting the following information about 'Clarinetwise' on behalf of =
my daughters ex clarinet
teacher. I appologise for it being so long after the subject was =
discussed on the list but it has
taken me this long to work out how to get things posted. I will be =
happy to pass on any comments
or questions to Jacqueline or Christopher...Just send them to me.

Happy blowing

I understand that there has been quite a bit of discussion about =
"Clarinetwise" on the Internet recently, and perhaps it might be helpful =
if I were to post a message on behalf of Clarinetwise. As yet, =
Clarinetwise is not on the Internet, but we shall be exploring this =
possibility at some stage in the future. Just at the moment, we are =
working flat out with membership applications flooding in by the =
sackload, and also the deadline for the first quarterly journal is =
drawing close. Linda has been kind enough to post this message on our =
behalf.

The first, and most important point to stress is that Clarinetwise =
is NOT a rival organisation to CASS. Jacqueline Browne and most of her =
team are committed CASS members and have no wish to disadvantage CASS in =
any way. Quite on the contrary, Clarinetwise hopes to work with CASS, =
and we are looking forward to helping to promote CASS events as well as =
our own. I can also confirm that some members of the CASS committee =
have already joined Clarinetwise. =20

When the British Flute Society launched a junior section some years =
ago (Flutewise) it lead to bitter arguments. Whatever the rights and =
wrongs, the result was that Flutewise broke away from the BFS amidst a =
great deal of unpleasantness which, I understand, ended up in the hands =
of lawyers. By starting Clarinetwise as an entirely independent =
organisation, the possibility of repeating such a horrible situation is =
avoided. Hopefully we can go forward without any animosity between CASS =
and Clarinetwise, to the benefit of both organisations.

We are sure that there is room for Clarinetwise as well as CASS. =
Clarinetwise will have a very different appeal to CASS, and as such will =
attract many players to join who have not been attracted by CASS. It is =
aimed particularly at younger players and music students as well as =
adult learners and teachers (particularly non specialist teachers) who =
are looking for lesson material. Clarinetwise will also cover a wider =
range of musical interests - for example we have several articles on =
composition in the pipeline and are planning an annual composition =
competition. We also have a regular examiner's column where an =
experienced examiner will answer a selection of letters, a repairer's =
advice column, a teacher's forum and a junior's page as well as Aunt =
Agatha's agony column, where a well known virtuoso will answer questions =
on just about anything! There will also be music to play and regular =
short technical exercises to help improve technique. Clarinetwise will =
NOT be covering concert reviews, reviews of the drier aspects of the =
repertoire, committee reports etc., which have been traditionally =
covered by CASS. Our playing days will be a welcome addition to those =
already being organised, and already Liz Goodwin of Flutewise is =
discussing the planning of joint Flutewise/Clarinetwise events.

The cost of Clarinetwise in the U.K. is just @-----. For =
the average clarinettist, this must represent a fraction of what is =
spent on reeds, music, lessons, accessories etc. , and for professionals =
is a tax deductible expense. I cannot believe that this is likely to =
make members resign from CASS. Our research suggests that there are =
probably well in excess of 20,000 clarinettists in the U.K. Examination =
of the CASS members list suggests that only about 5% of these are CASS =
members. This leaves a huge reserve of clarinettists who are not =
members of CASS and many of whom may be attracted to Clarinetwise.=20

During our promotion, we of course referred to the CASS member's =
list as well as various other sources. We have particularly aimed =
promotional material at teachers because we hope that they will not only =
enjoy Clarinetwise themselves, but also recommend Clarinetwise to their =
pupils. Many teachers have joined already, and we are receiving very =
encouraging feedback. =20
