I play with as little of a lower lip fold as possible, and on relatively
soft reeds (Zonda 2.5, VanDoren 3). I have never been able to rachet
up my jaw to play harder ones. The muscles in my lips and cheeks have
taken up the slack. I always thought that this was a flaw, but after
several years of playing the clarinet, my tone has gradually gotten
better and better...

Maybe I have the right idea after all...
