Scott Morrow said in his last post:
"The composition of that air, alone, does not affect the pitch."
I have proven the contrary to myself in an experiment I conducted at my
parents 50th wedding anniversary. Yes, there were balloons filled with
helium and a good part of the party was watching the children inhale the
heliumto talk in their cartoon voices.
So, being somewhat childish at heart and curious, I tried this with my
clarinet and the pitch did come out higher. Not just a few cents, but maybe
a third. It sounded like an E-flat clarinet. Want to have a trip? Try
doing this while circular breathing.
Now for my next experiment, I'm going to drink mass quantities of beer and
see if I can get my clarinet to sound like a bassett horn. And then, if I
think of it, I could see what it would be like to exhale while ... ah
...well, you know.
