You could test pitch and gas composition with an organ pipe, an electronic
tuner and balloons filled with different gasses and find out for real.

Otherwise, Ratthaus playing is a very subjective experience and when one is
in a condition to produce odd effects one is seldom in the best of scientific
environments, interior as well as exterior, to make reasoned judgements about
what is going on exactly. ;-) Do we need flamethrowers? If you want to get
gross, I know some nasty gas jokes that involve matches a la Petomane. The
science possibilities of gas composition and pitch variation are interesting
no matter what context the question first arose.
