Peter,
When I'm doing bass and Bb in summer concerts, I put a small piece
of wet sponge in the tip of my bass (and Bb) mouthpiece cap. I try and
position the sponge so that it's resting on the top of the mouthpiece and
the reed doesn't ram into it when I put the cap on. This really works for
me. It's just enough moisture to keep the reed in playing condition when
it's sitting for a long time.
