In light of the recent flurry of activity discussing the ICA Young Artist, I
wanted to share something new that will take place at ClarinetFest '97 in
Lubbock. We will be having an Orchestral Audition Competition. It is open to
any clarinetist who is not employed as a musician with a full-time
professional orchestra. There is no age limit, so whether you are a student
wanting to get experience in the rigors of professional auditions or a more
seasoned veteran wanting to get back into the swing, you can participate. The
process will be much like the ICA competition. A taped preliminary with
semi-final and final rounds occurring at ClarinetFest '97. This competition is
not an ICA sponsorred event like the Young Artist Competition or Composition
Competition. However, International Musical Suppliers and Gregory Smith Custom
Mouthpieces have graciously agreed to donate a nice prize for the top two
winners. Please see the announcement in the Nov./Dec. issue of THE CLARINET
for further details and repertoire requirements.

Also, for those concerned about having to compete with Ricardo Morales in the
ICA YA Competition, not to worry, he will be busy with his own feature solo
recital and solo with the Lubbock Symphony at the conference. Make plans now
to attend what is shaping up to be a FANTASTIC 5 days next summer - July
9-13,1997. The next issue of THE CLARINET has a sneak preview of some of what
will be going on.
