I, too, have noticed that playing clarinet helps drain one's
sinuses--temporarily, at least. I haven't experimented, though, to see
whether it's the higher or lower registers that do the most
decongesting.
At
the company where I work, the health plan lets you put aside some
pre-tax income for spending on various therapies. Besides
getting your head shrunk, visits to the optometrist and even to Navajo
sweat lodges, one of the therapies that's covered is clarinet
lessons--if they are prescribed by an orthodontist.
