I have always played single-lip, but this passage struck a nerve
(almost literally)! As a beginning clarinetist in the fourth grade, I had
to endure months of painful root canal work as a result of excessive biting
on the clarinet mouthpiece! I don't know if learning double-lipped from
the start would necessarily have been the answer, but, at the very least,
having a teacher (yes, this was public school!) who was aware of the
pitfalls of the beginning clarinetist could have helped! We shouldn't ALL
have to learn the hard way!
