Robert,
I was a semi-finalist in the competition last summer and the level of
playing was extremely high. Most of the contestants were in their early
20's. The person who won is already established as principal clarinetist
in an orchestra somewhere in South America, but most of the rest of us
were students. It never hurts to try, so you might as well send in a
tape. It was a really good experience for me.
