I have just been trying to catch up with about 2 weeks of KLARINET so =
excuse
me sending a reply to postings that are over a week old. I have read =
with interest
the messages about CLARINETWISE and feel compelled to put in my two =
penneth.

As the mother of a flautist AND a clarinettist all I can say about =
'Clarinetwise' is

HOORAY FOR JAQUELINE BROWNE!!!!!!

My eldest daughter Sian has been a member of 'Flutewise' for a few years =
now and
has benefitted from it a great deal in numerous different ways ie:-

Technical tips
Repertoire advice
Introduction to specialist flute shops & suppliers
'FLUTEWISE' events run by the 'FLUTEWISE' team
Details of 'Flute' events run by other people
Write ups on new recordings and new sheet music
Interesting information re professional flautists
Free sheet music
Insight into different occupations with flute connections
etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.!!!!! (The list is enormous)

Not to mention the fun she has had doing the quizes and crosswords, =
reading the
problem page and finding she is not the only one out there with =
problems, enjoying
the experiences of others as told in the letters page and some articles =
etc.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that 'FLUTEWISE' has changed the course =
of Sian's
flute life but I would say that it has made her involvement with the =
flute a much more
enjoyable one.

AT LONG LAST MY OTHER DAUGHTER GEMMA WILL HAVE SOMETHING=20
SIMILAR TO FLUTEWISE FOR CLARINET>

As for 'CLARINETWISE' being a 'RIVAL' of CASS. I would say very much to =
the=20
contrary. If it is anything like 'FLUTEWISE' it can only be good for =
CASS as I belive
'FLUTEWISE' is good for The British Flute Society (PAN). =20
The reasons for my belief? =20

a) there will be a lot more of interest to the younger reader, which =
let's face it,
until recently has been rather neglected by CASS. (Although, HATS =
OFF
TO CASS it is never the less a WONDERFUL magazine, I'm =
not knowcking it,
and at least they have included a Junior section in their last two =
issues).

b) The more that young clarinettists have to interest them, the more =
likely they are
to continue playing and ENJOYING their clarinet beyond the age of =
about 15.=20
AND what does that mean? MORE MEMBERS FOR CASS!!!!

c) For the adult reader there will be even more information for them =
to read and=20
digest. They will also be able to get an insight into Clarinet =
playing from a
child's eye view, which if they are teachers themselves can only =
be a good
thing.

d) Most importantly to me personally is that as a non-musician I get =
rather lost
trying to read CASS and PAN, (it's all so high brow and technical)
=
, YET when=20
my daughter gets her 'FLUTEWISE' magazine there is a =
fight on to see who=20
gets hold of it first. I literally read EVERY WORD =
FROM COVER TO COVER=20
-- sometimes more than once!!
It has helped me to become more knowledgeable about the most =
important
thing in my daughters life - her flute!! Through this knowledge I
=
have been able
to encourage her and be of some tangible use in furthering her =
flute studies.

END RESULT ?? Sian is now well on her way to making her own Flute
=
career.
=20

On the other hand, my other daughter Gemma is a Clarinettist. I have =
always been very
frustrated that there is not as much out there to keep her interest. I =
have always felt unable
to support her equally. Yes ... I have managed to encourage and support =
her but not in the=20
same way as my other daughter. It has been a constant struggle to try =
and learn about the
Clarinet world, its players, teachers and associated people. I have =
diffuculty in finding good
Clarinet recordings & sheet music. I never know where to contact to get =
supplies and we
never seem to get to know of many clarinet events going on. I have =
made the effort
as it would be unfair of me not to, but it has been very much an uphill =
struggle. I wonder=20
how much other parents would struggle to support their Clarinettist =
children if they didn't have=20
a flautist to try to keep up with.

I will certainly be sending off our subscription - if 'CLARINETWISE' is =
even half as good as
'FLUTEWISE' I think it will be the best @-----.

I'd also like to take this opportunity of THANKING ALL KLARINET MEMBERS =
for posting all
the interesting mail to the list. I read the KLARINET digest every =
evening and save all the
bits I think will be of interest to Gemma. I print them all out and =
send them to her in London
where she is attending a specialist music school. The list had been =
most enlightening to
both of us. We did try to send a message once but I didn't quite work =
out how to do it, I hope=20
this one reaches you.

>From two of the lists most avid fans!!
