Jane,
I don't know of any list of just female composers but I have
played some doozies which I am quite happy to recommend: Shulamit Ran
"For An Actor". It is around 10 minutes long. On a scale of 10 it's a 15. A
shorter and much easier
piece is by a friend of mine named Elaine Erickson, who lives in Iowa. It
is called "Cycles" and is only about 7-8 minutes long. It is slightly
more accessable for an audience and I've always had very good success
with it. She also wrote a real nice piece for clarinet and soprano (with
the singer making noises in the piano and with a little synthesized sound
on a pre-recorded tape) called "The Black Jewel". Katherine Hoover wrote
a short, accessable (and easy) "Set For Clarinet" - no, not to be
confused with the Martino. THere's tons of good stuff around just start
askng friends and you'll turn up all kinds of unknown treasures.
