I can think of a couple of pieces that fit your description. The first is
Wings for solo clarinet by Joan Tower. This piece is about 10 minutes long
and is pretty dificult, but very rewarding. There are a couple of
recordings of it with Laura Flax (I think that is who it is written for of
the Da Cappo Chamber Players) as well as one by Robert Spring. Another
piece is the Monologue for an Actor by Shalumit Ran (I hope this is spelled
right). I have never played this, but the music looks pretty interesting.
