On a related note, would anyone like to comment on the differences between
pianists and accompanists? I've had both. If you find a good accompanist
do anything to hang on to her/him. Move, buy them chocolates, a car,
donate a kidney, ANYTHING!! An accompanist will actually follow you, be
sesitive to your playing, match your dynamics (or heaven forbid, play
softer than you!), and allow you to have a musical opinion.
A pianist will say they can't play that movement slower, tell you
that you're too soft, act like they know the clarinet rep., and oh, by the
way - the ultimate - ask if you can be "darker" in this piece. You're
doomed to their musical opinions, tempos, etc. I love working with
frustrated concert pianists - couldn't do the contest circuit so I guess
I'll "just" be an "accompanist".
Sorry about the ranting but, I have to go to war, ops, I mean rehearsal
tomorrow with my accompanist (?).
