Hi Mark! Well, here's my last $0.02 on the 5RV (gee,
remember when typewriters had the "cents" key?!).
My Vandoren mouthpiece "spreadsheet" lists
the 5RV tip opening as 1. 065 mm (very small) and
the facing as 19.5 mm (long-ish). The recommended
reed strength goes from 2.5 to 5. For most of the mouthpieces
on this chart the recommended reed strengths stop at 4.

Anyway, there's no point except that I'm surprised (but,
hey, I often am!) that the 5RV is being offered as a student
mouthpiece!!! When I started to play, about 5 years ago,
I began with the 5RV **Lyre**. For me, as a beginner
(entirely self-taught amateur to boot) that mouthpiece had
way too long a lay and an insufficient tip opening for me
to learn to blow, much less *play*. These days, I take a
pretty long lay and prefer a narrow tip, but that's many, many
reeds and an embouchure (or two) ago!!!!

My only other piece of advice is get Buffet to undercut
the tone holes on that Vito for you!!! They will save the shavings
and make a "Blue Line Special" clarinet out of them!!! : )
Best, Bill Fogle.
