Sightreading! Sightreading! Sightreading!

Military Bands are good jobs if you get into one of the D.C. bands. Get in
touch with the bands directly. Don't let a recruiter talk you into signing
up first and promising you'll be placed in a band after you complete basic
training. You'll need to have a prepared solo, possibly prepared excerpts,
and expect to do lots of sightreading.
